A Journey Through Our History

Explore the milestones, achievements, and memorable moments that have shaped the Lake Milton Boat Club and its community over the years.

The History and Growth of the Lake Milton Boat Club

Founding and Early Vision

The Lake Milton Boat Club was established in 1949 by seven gentlemen who shared a deep enthusiasm for boating. After receiving its charter in 1950, the club’s first Commodore, P.K. Powell, set forth a vision to create a family-friendly gathering place where lake enthusiasts could come together to enjoy and promote boating activities. Since its inception, the club has achieved ongoing success, continued growth, and has solidified its status as a cherished institution within the Lake Milton community.

Expansion and Development (1950s–1970s)

Throughout the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, both the club and Lake Milton experienced bustling activity. Membership in the Boat Club grew, surpassing 225 families. During this era, new picnic areas and wooden docks were constructed, which complemented a modest clubhouse and bathhouse. To facilitate boat launching, a portal crane was installed, enhancing the club’s offerings and convenience for members.

Challenges and Recovery (1980s)

In 1986, the US Army Corps of Engineers deemed the dam at Lake Milton unsafe due to cracks and deteriorating mechanisms. The city of Youngstown, unable to afford the necessary repairs, made the difficult decision to open the gates and drain the lake. This period proved challenging for the entire community, with businesses, especially the boat club – suffering significant losses. Fortunately, the state of Ohio intervened, repairing the dam and installing a new spillway. In 1988, Lake Milton was designated as Ohio’s 72nd State Park, with the dam completed and the gates closed.

Although the process of refilling the lake began in 1988, a drought that summer kept water levels unusually low, delaying the return of full recreational activities at the boat club until 1989. This marked the beginning of a new era for the club.

Modernization and Growth (1990s–2020s)

During the 1990s, several improvements were made to the club’s facilities. A driveway was constructed at the entrance, followed by the asphalting of the remaining circle. Recreational amenities—including a basketball court, a bocce court, and a sand volleyball court—were added, as well as a launch ramp. Additional land was acquired to expand boat trailer storage. As the club entered the new millennium, new bathhouses and a modern clubhouse were built to better serve the membership.

The Future is Today

Today, the Lake Milton Boat Club is home to 135 families. The nearly ten-acre facility features over 90 pagodas, 45 decks, and numerous picnic areas. In 2025, the club embarked on its most ambitious project yet: a comprehensive two-year initiative, launched in October 2025, to replace all 135 docks, walkways, and bridges. This construction is scheduled for completion by March 2027. In July, the club celebrated its 75th anniversary, marking a significant milestone. The future remains bright for both Lake Milton and the Lake Milton Boat Club.
